There is lack of inclusive participation of women in economic activities, resulting in the marginalisation of both women and the youth in development initiatives. The Gender Program at TRALSO was established in 2001 to enable the organisation to implement gender activities focusing on the plight of rural women in the Transkei. This program aims at raising awareness and increasing the participation and involvement of women and the youth in community development initiatives.
TRALSO’s experience with land issues confirms that women toil hard to make a living off the land. This experience also reveals that women are denied access to land on the basis of patriarchy and legacies of apartheid.
The objectives of this programme:
To highlight and address problems that women encounter in their day-to-day struggle for survival and access to land
To conduct research on gender issues that affect women and to empower rural women to handle these issues and to influence policies to accommodate their needs
To train rural women and youth on HIV/AIDS, gender and reproductive health and facilitate the establishment of healthy lifestyles and vegetable gardens to prolong the lives of HIV positive people
To instill a culture of learning in rural children and promote early childhood development.
The strategies employed in achieving the above objectives:
Workshops and training that inform women of government policies regarding land issues
Establishment of a women's forum that meets at local level
Provision of nutritious food
Outdoor and indoor play apparatus for children
Activities conducted by Gender Program, include:
Local Economic Development
Lobbying and Advocacy
HIV/AIDS training workshops and establishment of health gardens
Facilitating rural women's access to land
This programme has resulted in an increase in the number of women and youth involved in programme activities with active participation of women in meetings and workshops.
