This component caters for victims of forced removals who require assistance to engage in land restitution as contemplated in the Restitution of Land Rights Act 22 of 1994.
This programme undertakes research, facilitates, advises and disseminates information to concerned land claiming communities, who often have limited capacity to undertake an effective claims process.
TRALSO assists the communities during the land claim process by building the capacity of the claimants to enable them to acquire skills, such as: negotiations, strategic planning, conflict resolution, management, and mediation.
This programme has served to lobby government and other stakeholders in the formulation of policies and legislation that enhance community participation in the land restitution process.
Current activities include the following:
Facilitating the resolution of the outstanding land claims particularly Langeni and Xhongorha amongst others
Lobbying Government to accept the validity of claims which were excluded from the restitution programme prior to its closing date. In addition to acceptance of these claims, TRALSO will establish a framework which will allow redress for the victims.
Post-settlement support by means of monitoring and provision of specialist services to both the claimants and the state. TRALSO will provide para-legal advice and broker litigation support to ensure fair restitution.
The formation of community lobby groups and legal entities, research reports and policy changes, have resulted in a number of successfully resolved claims.
