programmes : Land Reform : Land Tenure

The lack of legislation and policy for rural areas, together with poor land administration, lack of political direction and the frequent absence of title ownership makes for uncertain occupancy by residents of Transkei.

There has been substantial lack of understanding among the rural communities about the existing land tenure systems and its implications. It is for this reason that this project was established by TRALSO – to assist rural communities to access land with secure long-term tenure. This is achieved through educational workshops on tenure reform.

As a result of this programme, residents can receive title deeds of ownership within a legal framework that supports this ownership model.

This component will take particular account of the historical exclusion of women from secure access to land because of systems of patriarchy, capitalism and apartheid. Therefore TRALSO will work closely with the gender and agrarian transformation elements to facilitate the development of mechanisms that are conduce to effective, secure and productive utilisation of available land.
